Simply---Jesus IS still the Answer
I am awakened at the early hour of 4 a.m. on 12/29/16 by the heavy rain, a concern for and prayer for my son-in-law as he drives/delivers spices for a living. I pray God’s hand of protection on him, to envelope him in a hedge of protection and to close every opening in that hedge. I could see angels were in place to care for him. But my mind also went to a testimony in the Bible of a eunuch reading the Bible…at the least the Bible they had then. It is a testimony from Acts 8. The eunuch/soldier was on his chariot reading and the Spirit of God told Philip to go to him, so Philips response was to RUN to him and join him. A conversation ensued and the eunuch invited him to join him on his chariot and as he read from Isaiah Philip simply asked if he understood what he was reading. The eunuch had enough humility in him to say…” how can I unless someone guides me”.
The point I was seeing was not the excitement of Philip to RUN at the command of the Spirit. It was how we teach…at times. We try to put people in a box, characterize them, assume things upon them. Some might say Philip was “called” to minister to members of the military but the Spirit only sent him to the eunuch. We assume so much without even considering the text or the Spirit. We simply read words and then assign a meaning…our own minds thought of. Philip was not called to the “military”, he was called to the one SEEKING GOD and Philip did not obey the Spirit simply on the evidence of the eunuch seeking, but at the command of the Spirit. We might even focus on the fact that he was reading the “scriptures” …” Old” Covenant which spoke of Jesus Christ, but he was at a particular scripture in the “Old” Covenant that joined the “New” Covenant as what was written several years before was now revealed, even after the crucifixion of and resurrection of Jesus Christ. A soldier would have been intimately knowledgeable about such occurrences in the kingdom or at least had some knowledge.
Philip was not called to a “military” man even though the man was a soldier. He was not called to a eunuch even though the man was a eunuch. Philip was called to a man who was simply reading the Word of God and pondered…I wonder who THIS is talking about and God sent him someone to give an answer to his pondering. He did not prophesy to him or expound beyond his pondering. He did not try to impress the man with anything except to give him an answer to his question. He pointed to Jesus Christ and him crucified.
What my point? We try to say so much and speak about a lot and in doing so, at times we speak to generally and miss the simplicity of a person, no matter their occupation or “call”, and they’re simply reading “a book”, but with a searching heart, mind, soul, and body. All he needed was the answer to his question. Who was THIS speaking of? It was Jesus Christ. Philip was called to the one at that time for that question in that persons heart/mind. The answer was simply…Jesus Christ and the evidence lined up with what the eunuch would have heard as a soldier. God is so specific at times and so good to give an answer to the question. It is found IN…His Word. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was made flesh”…Jesus was and still is the Word and the answer, and him crucified. Will you trust the answer? THAT, YOU must answer and then obey.
